Abstract
Recently, Iranian encounter with modernity, technologically or theoretically, has been tremendously addressed by many socio-political investigators. Among them, Farzin Vahdat, in his PhD thesis, now published as a book, asserts that in this encounter, Iranians are often on the wrong way. From the recognition of the positive aspect of modernity as the dominant, and simultaneously ignoring the emancipator aspect of it to coining the term “mediated subjectivity” in order to explore Iranians’ thought from the Constitutional revolution to the Islamic revolution, Vahdat emphasizes on this distorted conception of modernity in Iran. However, in doing so, he bears some categories which are not necessarily modern on the Iranians’ thought just to make his position positive. In order to show the points of strength and weakness of Vahdat’s idea, the present study attempts to review his book, entitled “God and Juggernaut: Iran’s Intellectual Encounter with Modernity”.
