This study examines the critical discourse of the film “Flying over a Cuckoo's Nest”. The present study is a descriptive and analytical study and the Fairclough critical discourse analysis approach has been used for analysis. The theories of Fairclough, Foucault, and Goffman have also been used in this research. Research findings show that there are four discourses in the movie “Flying Over the Cuckoo's Nest”. The first discourse is discipline. Discipline is applied to the mentally ill through members of the mental hospital. The second discourse is the deconstructive discourse in which mental patients within the hospital oppose the structures that exist in the mental hospital. The third discourse is motivational discourse. The film also shows that the mentally ill are stigmatized by the mental hospital, the family, and ultimately members of society, and finally, the discourse of power is seen in the film, power being imposed on the mentally ill by hospital members. Among the most prominent characters in this film are Nurse Rachd, who is a symbol of power, and Murphy who is a symbol of freedom and liberation, and in fact the main protagonist of the film, who intends to free the mentally ill and, according to Foucault, insane people from disciplinary institutions.

Although interest in the discourse analysis of national development policies and plans has been growing in recent years; however, little attention has been paid to the context in which these texts are articulated. This article, by supposing essential relationships between text and its context, aimed to interpret the third development plan of Iran and to analyze the social context of the plan according to Baldwin’s monography and the method of the Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA). The article identified “the order of discourse of planning and development” as a joint around which two dominant discourses including (i) “individually centralized planning discourse” and (ii) “growth-based development discourse” are articulated. In addition, “a participatory decentralized planning discourse” and “a distribution-based development discourse” have been identified as competing discourses in relation to the first two discourses. Finally, the article by analyzing the political and cultural context of the plan showed that the production of the plan as a text, instead of following a rational-scientific process, has mainly been influenced by ideological-discursive formulations seeking to maintain specific relation of power among key actors and geographical spaces through text.

Critical analysis of metaphor aims to study and analyze discourse to show how covert power is enacted, practiced, and reproduced in text and talk through metaphors in the social and political contexts. In the present research, instances of discourse metaphors extracted from opposing wing’s newspapers such as Keyhan and MardomSalari in Iran and Telegraph and Mirror in England were analyzed based on Charteris-black’s integrative critical metaphor research. The aim was to investigate the similarities and differences between metaphors and conceptual metaphors in each discourse and subsequently in each language. The results shows the metaphorical features of the discourses in terms of source domains. Furthermore, this study shows how identical facts are demonstrated differently by opposing ideologies and how metaphors are used for persuasion. This method was an effective approach in demonstrating hidden power relations and considered as a relatively new and integrative view to the usage of metaphors in discourse.

The history of Abbasid era is the focus of attention from different angles, but previous studies have rarely dealt with it. This work has been considered and investigated as a political work so far. By traditionally scrutinizing the context of this book and critical analysis, one can realize other existing aspects than Askandarbeig Monshi incidents. Though Abassid period history is the continuation of the Islamic Iranian histographic heritage, the basic approaches in this way of historiography should be sought in Iranian Islamic history heritage. Relying upon the critical discourse, the writers of the present study have made the most attempts to deal with more important issues such as history stimulant, insight identification, fatalism, and other social relations in Askandarbeig Monshi to be responded in Abassid period history. The results of the current investigation reveal that Askandarbeig Monshi has interpreted the events with relying on the same theology, heroic, and political approaches; besides, he has known the history instigator as the God given manifestation by Safavid kings. Undoubtedly his work can be considered as a scares study in the realm of perspicacity and theology. It has been far more exceedingly than other Iranian traditional historians so that his work is a somehow considerable work in the field of historical society by introducing the low-level pundits of Safavid dynasty.
