Heraclitus of Ephesus (480-550 B. C.) has been called the Obscure Philosopher since long time ago. At first, it was Timone of Philionte, the satirist of the 3rd century B. C., who called the expression style of Heraclitus enigmatique. The name of the style, then, was given to the author, himself. At last, Heraclitus was known as the Obscure Philosopher. So, the title of the book has had an ancient history. Regarding the Pre-Socratics, we do not have any sources available except the Early Greek Philosophy by Sharaf (Sharafeddin Khorasani), and the Cosmology of Heraclitus of Ephesus: Texts and Some Remaining Translations by Mehdi Kohandani. Therefore, the Obscure Philosopher is appreciated. The book is written by Dariyush Darvishi Published by Nashre Porsesh in 2012. It is a research on the ideas of the Heraclitus, the pre-Socratic philosopher, and it is a translation of his words into Persian. Here, we consider the discussions of the book, and only we point out to some notes on the ideologies of Heraclitus and the author’s review on them. It is concluded that this book has a duplicate advantage for the Persian readers; first, it is the compilation of the present popular translations such as the Persian translations from the Heraclitus words with their Greek original texts; second, it is the studying of the fundamental bases of his ideas.

In recent decades, lots of introductory books were written on the subject of Ethics and Morality in English and in other languages as well. These books help students get familiarized with this subject, but most of them are not comprehensive, and they only focus on some issues, especially normative ethics, and on some issues in Applied Ethics. The shortage of good textbook in the philosophy of Ethics and Morality is much more obvious in Persian, and there is no comprehensive book available in the subject that satisfies the academic criteria. One of the introductory books, but comprehensive, is “Ethics: An Introduction to Moral Philosophy” compiled by Noel Stewart. In this book, the main fields of ethics (metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics) are discussed. The unique and conspicuous features of this book is its cohesion, comprehensiveness in arguments and discussions, critically assessment of arguments, brevity and clearness. So, it is a comprehensive and cohesive textbook for researchers to use in the field of moral philosophy. In this paper, having introduced the content of the book in detail, the advantages and disadvantages of the book will be studied technically and by content analysis.

This article tries to analyze the content of the book Phenomenology of Perception by Merleau-ponty critically. Therefore, having considered the importance of this work in the formation of the concept of Phenomenology in the author’s own period, we regard the role of this book in the following trend of Phenomenology. In introducing the author of this work, Maurice Merleau-ponty, we point out to the disadvantages of Phenomenology by Husserl from the viewpoint of Merleau-ponty. This paper, also, studies the translation of this book in English (since the original work was in French); so, the translator of the work; i. e., Colin Smith (1914-1990), will be introduced. The major part of this article is dedicated to the Content Analysis of this work, critically review its translation, and criticize the conceptual analytical status of the book itself. In the proceeding sections, we focus on the chronological order of the book, the sufficiency of resources, accuracy in references and citations, the form, and the language of the work, which is to some extent difficult. At last, in the conclusion, we mention the central importance of this work for some majors such as Philosophy in the post-graduate degrees, and even its permeation into the fields of Art, Medicine, and Nursing.

Walter Benjamin, the famous German Philosopher and a Literature critic, had published some articles separately which were compiled and translated into English in the form of a selection titled: Illuminations. In 2014, a book under the title of The Selection Works of Benjamin Walter with a Persian translation was published by Nashre Elm. It is claimed inadequately that the five articles in this book are translations of the same five articles from the English Selection. We studied this work by finding the English text claimed to be translated by the Persian translator and some other sources that had not been mentioned. Despite the Content Analysis of the Benjamin’s articles, we compared the Persian translation with the original text to find out the accuracy of this translation. We concluded that the translation is full of formal and content problems which it does not succeed to deserve the title of translation of the regarded articles. It also does not qualify to be considered an academic and a scientific textbook, and even it is not proper for general use; nevertheless, it is valuable to attend these kinds of works. However, the translator should at least have considered the scientific patterns so that this attempt would be useful.

In this article, the book titled Jewish Themes in Spinoza’s Philosophy is introduced, studied, and criticized. State University of New York Press published this book under the title of Jewish Themes in Spinoza’s Philosophy with the edition of two prominent experts in Spinoza and Jewish studies: Heidi Ravven and Lenn Goodman in 2002. Many outstanding critics believe that this book is the first serious attempt to understand Spinoza’s thought and to show its place in the history of Jewish philosophy. In this book, the custom tradition of similar books on this subject is not observed, and for the first time, the important issues of Spinoza’s philosophy and its Jewish themes have been examined. The aim of this book was to introduce Spinoza as a Jewish philosopher. However, the chief editors did not succeed to choose the unified articles whether regarding the subject or the technical content. The lack of a chapter as conclusion is indicating to some extent that these articles do not reach to a unified agreement on relating Spinoza to Judaism.

In the recent decades, religious pluralism has been extensively discussed as a theory that claims to establish reconciliation between the religious diversities based on an interpretation of the absolute truth. John Hick, as one of the main theoreticians in this field, has presented a comprehensive discussion regarding this notion in his book: An Interpretation of Religion. Hick’s theory can be analyzed from different prospects in his book and it offers the opportunity to probe its both positive and negative aspects. Hick has attempted to express his theory philosophically through the interpretation of those religions emerged from divergent cultures and traditions in alignment. Besides, this theory can be assessed by the study of the exterior and the interior compatibility of the Pluralism theory by focusing on his book whether it is possible to accept the results of Hick’s theory based on his arguments and reasoning or not.

The book: Incommensurability of Scientific Paradigms written by Gholam Hossein Moghadam Heidari published by Nashre Ney in 2006. The author’s aim is to illustrate the theory of incommensurability of Thomas Kuhn by explaining it. The structure of the book is formed based on explaining the theoretical foundations of Kuhn’s theory according to historiography, Gestaltism, the definition of the concept of incommensurability, and at last, by studying the function of this theory. The strong points of the book cause the incommensurability approach of Kuhn in his work: The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, to be explained simply and clearly by using historical evidence. So, this paper tries to find an answer to this question: Whether the author of this book could be able to present Kuhn’s theory of incommensurability from all its aspects and according to his intellectual evolution or not?

This paper is going to criticize the book: Kant's Practical Philosophy from Critique to Doctrine written by Gray Banham by using a descriptive-analytic method based on writer's interpretation of this work, and it aims to indicate that although this book is a new reading of Kant's practical philosophy, it has some significant problems by itself. Some of these problems include the unclearness of the text, the selectivity of the discussions, the lack of conclusion at the end of each chapter, the excessive compression and the extension of the discussed subjects. Moreover, the author of this article will introduce the structure of the Kant's Practical Philosophy from Critique to Doctrine and explain its advantages, the most important of which include the special attention of Banham to the relation between Kant's different works and the philosophical process of Kant’s thought in the practical philosophy (from critical works to doctrinal works), and investigate those works of Kant which were less considered (specially by Iranian Kant scholars), and consider the opposition of Banham with the accepted viewpoint of most interpreters of Kant’s practical Philosophy (formalistic interpretation) and his formulating a new interpretation of it (teleological interpretation).

Emphasizing on the necessity of acquiring knowledge on the soul is common to all schools and religions. Psychology is an important part of the Philosophical Systems for many philosophers which to some extent belongs to Physics and from some aspects belongs to Theology (Metaphysics). A great deal of philosophical literature from the time of Plato and Aristotle to the modern times has been devoted to this subject. In the Book of Healing, actually, Avicenna, followed Aristotle in discussing Psychology as a branch of Physics (Natural sciences). The book titled: The Explanation of the Healing of the Soul written by professor Davood Samadi Amoli is a highly academic, elegant, and educational book on Persian translation, Arabic syntax, philosophical terminology and an explanation of the Book of Healing by Avicenna. However, this book also has some disadvantages which will be mentioned in this paper. The most important shortcoming of the book is that it does not follow the styles of Peripatetic and Avicennism philosophers.

The Lantern of the Path is a book with moral and mystical contents attributed to Imam Ja’far Al-Sadiq (Upon Him Prayer and Peace), which was considered by mystics and Sufis at different periods in history on which some Sufis wrote commentaries. The writing style of the book regarding the content and the arrangement of chapters is remarkably similar to Sufis’ works. Whether or not this book has been correctly attributed to Imam Sadiq (UHPP) has always been a challenge among scholars. An analysis of the arguments made and discussions generated by both opponents and proponents show that such reasons, particularly given for important issues, are based on some parts of this book, which are by no means from the original parts of the book, but they were added to it later; or the existed parts which were neglected. This important issue makes it worthwhile to do codicology studies on the manuscripts of this book. On the other hand, reviewing manuscripts gives valuable insights into the history of the book’s emerging. The manuscripts of the book have lots of pluralities which are rarely found in other works. The most striking differences among these versions include difference in the introduction, number of chapters, content of the book, and in the final part of the book which should be investigated.

Caring is an old and familiar concept in ethics and religion thoughts of human, but it has never been considered independently up to some decades ago. On Caring by Milton Mayeroff in 1971 was the first philosophical book written to study caring itself. The book centralized on the recognizing the concept of caring, introducing the necessary components for the development of a caring relationship, and the characteristics of a human life which is organized on the axis of caring. Mayeroff regards caring as a help to progress and the other self-realization (whether to a creative human or an idea), and he claims that caring can give order, meaning and orientation to the humans’ lives. He tries to prove the concept of his claim through definition and limitation. Indeed, the book: On Caring gives breath to caring as a core concept in the Bioethics and the Ethics of human beings. This book is the first junction of Heidegger’s concept of caring with the concept of that as treatment, the initiation of a flourishing path for the analysis of the concept of caring, and its development in the field of theorizing in the Ethics, Education, Economy and Political sciences.

The history of contemporary Islamic philosophy has a different situation in relation to the past. Its influencing from the other epistemic areas, especially the Western philosophy as well as facing new discourse issues have caused various parts of this episode of Islamic philosophy history to be distinct from the other parts since Al-Farabi period. Mohammad Fanaie Eshkevari has tried to study and interpret this approach in his book titled: An Introduction to the Contemporary Islamic Philosophy through a historical narrative. An attempt to explain the issues and the intellectual approaches of Muslim thinkers in the Seminary and university were the main motivations for writing this book. The fact that each one of these thinkers has had what a special role in extracting the issues out of the Islamic philosophy and its adaptation to the current state of thought in Iran shows that the author of the book seeks to find the imperatives of the contemporary history of the Islamic Philosophy. The basis of a historical perspective in An Introduction to the Contemporary Islamic Philosophy has been neglected and it is not clear that from which point of view the history of the contemporary Islamic philosophy has been studied.

This paper is a review on the book: Plato’s Cosmology and Its Ethical Dimensions by Gabriela Roxana Carone. She begins her research by centralizing on Timaeus, Philebus, Statesman and Laws, and by assuming that Plato’s cosmology, in these dialogues, provides him with new foundation for his ethical theory which lacks the shortcomings of his medium works. Carone also attempts to resolve the anaphoric conflicts that some interpreters observe in these dialogues, and the conflicts between dialogues entirely. Despite the book is comprehensive in discussing the problems, providing references, presenting intellectual reasoning and although it is precise in the analysis of premises, there are some problems left unanswered by Carone: Is it necessary to understand Plato by studying his works comprehensively, consistently, and without any conflicts? Also Does the understanding of Plato’s cosmology depend on studying its historical backgrounds? Carone has written this book as a Platonist rather than as an impartial researcher and interpreter.
