This paper is a critical study of two Persian translations of Oscar Wilde’s playscript “Salomé”, which brings under study the issue of textual manipulations in translating the mentioned playscript from a textological viewpoint. It is to be said that the selection of the two translations under study, one by Abdollah Kowsari and the other by Abolhasan Tahami, has been based on the feature of the popularity of either the translator or the publisher and the choice of the typological items included in this study has been made on the basis of comparing the texts of both Persian translations with the original English version of the playscript “Salomé” published in 1894. The central question in this study addresses the ways by which the source text of the playscript has been manipulated in the two Persian translations, a question whose answer has been sought in three overall patterns of 1) elimination of certain parts of the English text in translation 2) addition of certain parts to the translated text and 3) distorting the stylistic patterns of the text, by looking into a sample of problematic items detected in the texts of both translations. Examining the samples drawn out in this study is suggestive of translational manipulation in both translated texts, and supports the finding that the effort by the two translators at rendering this literary playscript has made the Persian versions of the work undergo a range of undue distortions in the textual level as compared with the English text; what has brought about the textual transmogrification of the work in translation.

Born in the second Hijri century, Jahiz is one of the most brilliant thinkers of his time who has had deep ideas about translation and meaning. It can be argued that these ideas are at the same level of importance of those of modern ideas. In this article, these ideas of Jahiz are investigated, based on what he has said in his book Al-Hayavan. Therefore, after "introduction", first Jahiz and particularly his book Al-Hayavan is introduced; then his ideas about translation and meaning are analyzed. In that book, he has explained the difficulties of translation, the capabilities translators need for translation, and the severely difficult task of translating religious texts. He also believes it is imperative for translator to have the same command of the languages from which and to which he translates. For Jahiz, the knowledge a translator needs to have about the subject matter of the text in his hand must be at the same level of the knowledge the writer of the text has about it. These ideas are at the same level of clarity and exactness to the ideas provided by modern thinkers and theorists. Moreover, whatever Jahiz has said about translation, clearly indicates he has had a clear and exact understanding of meaning and the known and hidden layers of the meaning of a text.

The book Symmetries of Islamic Geometric Patterns written by Seyed Jan Abbas and Amer Shaker Salman has been translated into Persian by Amene Agharabi. Due to the authors' mastery of mathematics, the book has a different approach to other works in the field of Islamic patterns, which has made it attractive and useful for both researchers in the field of Islamic art and mathematical sciences, but its topics and points cannot be understood in its Persian translation. According to the main text of the book, it seems the lack of understanding of concepts is related to the quality of translation. Therefore, the present critique is about the Persian translation of this book. In order to evaluate this translation, the entire English text of the book was adapted to the translated text. Cases were criticized in 6 categories; 1) Incorrect translation, 2) Untranslated words and phrases, 3) Multiple translations for one word and multiple words with one translation, 4) Reverse translation, 5) Changes in the sentences and paragraphs of the original text, and 6) Selection of unfamiliar equivalent. The existence of serious and many problems in Persian translation has caused the text to be incomprehensible and as a result, the reader has been deprived of a different and valuable points of view of this book which are vital issues. Finally, the book needs serious revision in translation.

The verb is one of the important pillars of grammar, the structure of which is disputed by grammarians. Hence, research to remove ambiguity has become one of the most important necessities of grammar. In this article, with a comparative study of verb structure in both Persian and Spanish, with regard to the verbs of the book El Libro de Los Abrazos and its Persian translation, first the cause of disagreement about verb structure, then the way out of them provide an appropriate comparative classification of verb properties in both languages. During the research, it was found that the main reason for the disagreement about the structure of the verb is related to the type of division of language morphemes by the experts and the position of the preposition in it. After reviewing, we put the preposition below the lexical morpheme and considered the result of noun / adjective / adverb / verb / preposition+ verb as "compound verb" and the result of noun / adjective / adverb + derivative verbs as "derivative verb". In addition to providing a comparative division of verb structure in two languages and removing ambiguities about derivative and compound verbs, it became clear what the reason for the frequency of compound verbs in Persian compared to Spanish was.

The book Sociological Research in Modern Persian Fiction is the translation of the book A Study of Recent Persian Prose Fiction with Special Reference to the Social Background written by Reza Navabpour, which is one of the most accurate books on the analysis of contemporary Iranian fiction. By the dialectic examination of literature and history, from the Constitution revolution to the 1979 revolution, the author has studied not only major historical events, but also micro-political events with a deep critical looking, and how they have Influenced fiction. Despite the socio-historical approach to contemporary fiction, relying on no sociological theory, but in the method of new historicism critics, it examines contemporary fiction in relation to heterogeneous and conflicting discourses and shows the implicit positions of the text in relation to those discourses. But the characteristics of the translation of the book by Abolghasem Serri; Including the inconsistency of the type of translation with the text and subject of the book, linguistic, structural and content nonchalance, misleading and unpleasant purism, which may inadvertently involve the reader in the language of the text, has led to an inaccurate translation.

This research is based on a structured analysis of the book written by Pierre Bourdieu, called Photography, a Middle-Brow Art. This study is a descriptive analysis of the different sections of the book from different perspectives. In this research, we considered the Persian translation of the book. Moreover, the origin of the work and the effectiveness of its contents after more than half a century from its publication, along with its advantages and disadvantages were discussed. We also compared the Persian translation to the English version. The translation of the work was also examined, which revealed that the book has a decent translation quality, despite detecting a few errors in some sections. It can be concluded that due to the long time since its publication and the speed of change in its concerning fields, namely sociology and photography, most arguments in the book can no longer be cited. Also, because the book contains discontinuous articles and does not have an explicit conclusion, it does not have the desired unity in general, which might result in the fact that each section can be read independently.

Quality assessment of literary texts translation has always been irregular since some theorists believe that faithful translation to the original text is impossible. Therefore, through time, various theories for literary texts assessment have been created. In this paper with the comparative study of the value system of Lorca's "The moon" romance discourse and its Persian translation by Shamloo, has been emphasized the importance of discourse and context in the analysis and translation of literary texts, via investigating the factors such as assumption, previous background, utterances, the principle of cooperation, connection and coherence and theme. Besides, it has been shown that to what extent the translator could remain faithful to the source text by observing the discourse and context of the target language; as in this way Shamloo in the translation of “The moon” romance, has preserved all the linguistic coherence and also established rhetorical coherences except in one case. Therefore, by assuming that we know the necessity of paying attention to the discourse and context of the source-language and target-language in translation, Shampoo’s translation of “The moon” romance could be considered a faithful translation to the original text.

Reviewing the Persian translation of Umberto Eco’s “Art and Beauty in the Middle Ages” (translated by Faride Mahdavi Damghani), is the subject of this article. The article does not concentrate on evaluating the original book, which is widely acknowledged by those who are involved in this field, and just outlines its subjects, chapters, and also its importance. In order to review the translation, the first 25 pages of the Persian text have been checked against the English one, which is introduced as the source of translation, and the errors have been divided into four categories and in each case, in addition to an explanation, the suggested translation is provided, too. The large quantity of errors is eloquent of the necessity for a serious revision to the translation of such an important book, which is usually used as a source by students and those who are interested in art and aesthetic studies.

One of the most valuable and academic books is "Microeconomic Analysis" which is written by Hal.R Varian which is one of the top scientific sources of microeconomics. Ney Publishing has published this book which is translated by Mr. Reza Hosseini and now it is one of the educational resources of microeconomics in postgraduate studies in Iranian universities. Given the valuable position of this book, its translation requires a critical review and this article has tried to evaluate the weaknesses and strengths of this book according to the analytical-descriptive method by quantitative and qualitative analysis. It means discussing the appearance features, writing, edition, idiomatic translations, and text translation. It has been concluded that the translation of this book is quantitatively acceptable, but it has qualitative disadvantages that are not sufficient for the translation of an academic scientific book. It is suggested that due to the numerous editions of the book's translation and its importance, the next editions of this translation should be reviewed and the proposed corrections can be considered.

The present paper aims at introducing “Verbal Hygiene” by Deborah Cameron (1995, 2012) and assessing the quality of its translation into the Persian Language. In her book, Cameron discusses long-standing debates among proponents of two competing perspectives on language use. On the one hand, there are the traditionalist grammarians who contend that any change is undesirable. Accordingly, they seek to prescribe standards for using language. On the other hand, there are the linguists who argue that language is naturally in a state of flux. “Verbal Hygiene” is a term coined by Cameron to refer to all discourses, practices, and measures directed at regulating language. In this paper, the quality of the Persian translation of the book was assessed based on the model proposed by Katharina Reiss for translation criticism (Reiss, 2000), and it was shown that the translation is poor and quite unsatisfactory. Misinterpretation of the source text, incorrect rendering of the concepts and meanings, grammatical calques, lack of fluency, inappropriate equivalents, and intermingling spoken and written styles of language use are among the deviations in the target text.

In fact, the exam must be regarded as a touchstone of quality for students who will be permitted to further their studies in their fields only when they can pass it; therefore, the exam must follow certain standards so that equity is ensured for all participants and objectivity is reduced to minimum. The present paper defines factors of objectivity, reliability and validity of Master's degree entrance exam for German-to-Persian translation students. Studying these factors shows that translation questions, given their subjective nature, are not suitable for Master’s degree exam and often degraded to evaluate just participants’ vocabulary knowledge and reading comprehension skills. More importantly, translation questions must be used for testing one’s translation skills and consequently cannot be used to evaluate language knowledge.

The main subject of this paper is Robert Filmer’s Patriarcha which is the essential text in the history of political thought and in a sense it is one of the most important sources of the controversial debates on politics in early modern England. We think that Patriarcha was one of the last systematic and coherent attempts to defend the "natural character of politics" and "divine right of kings to rule given by God alone. We try to show that Filmer’s point of view, in spite of its affinities with ancient political philosophers, it was essentially different because it is totally based on the revelation. Generally, we will attempt to understand Filmer’s text in the light of the rhetorical war between the defenders of the pre-modern political conception (emphasizing the naturalness of politics and denying the equity in political rights) and the proponents of the new politics (emphasizing the artificial character of politics and the idea of ‘the individual possessed unconditional right by nature”.) Also, we cast light on the Persian translation of the Patriarcha and argue that the non-literalness of this rendering has led to some misunderstandings and erroneous equivalents.

Khayyam, a poet from the "saffron shores" with worldwide fame, is on the top of Russian poetry and literature because of his charming, thoughtful, and philosophical quatrains, along with other poets of the "ancient land" of Iran. The present article aims at introducing and criticizing the translations of Khayyam’s quatrains into Russian and showing the influence of his poems and ideas on Russian translators and poets. Russian translators, Iranologists, diplomats, and poets played a significant role in introducing Khayyam to the Russian society. Book of poems of Toreverov, Chachikov, Surkov, Kedrin, Ivanov, Sannikov, Vinokurov, Plisetsky, Yesenin, and Gamzatov devoted some pages to Khayyam. Studies indicate that in addition to praising Khayyam, Russian poets sometimes began to express the idea of their work with a word from Khayyam as the epigraph of their poems. Studies indicate that for most thinkers, Khayyam’s quatrains are the source of inspiration for philosophical and mystical ideas and a source for saturating the spiritual void, understanding the "mysteries of eternity", solving the riddle of the "ancient world" and cosmology. Investigating the poems studied in the article indicate that Khayyam’s quatrains opened the mysterious doors of the universe to most Russian thinkers and readers and let them taste the wine of the universe, although some of them had different interpretations of Khayyam’s poems due to contradictions in his poems.

In this article, I tried to investigate the rhetorical aspects of Creswell’s “A Concise Introduction to Mixed Methods Research” with a critique of the Persian translation of the book. After the introduction and problem statement and methodology, I tried to introduce all sections of the book, describe its formal aspects, and trace standpoint of the work among similar works and then mention the main weaknesses of the Persian translation, which include machinist translation, editorial errors, pronunciation problems, errors in finding fitted equivalent terms, disruption in harmonious use of phrases, misspellings and so on. Then by using Spurr’s (1993) model of rhetoric analysis, I tried to extract sample sentences from important sections of the book that explicitly have rhetorical acts and categorize them. This rhetorical aspect would be the point of departure for a methodological discussion about the pre-assumptions of this structure for research.

This is a critical assessment of the second volume of the book An Illustrated English-Persian Dictionary of Prehistoric Archaeology, written by Seyed Mansour Seyed Sajadi. The book suffers from several shortcomings which have been discussed in detail, especially the ambiguities and wrong information of the entries. It is obvious that the sources of gathering information about the entries, especially those related to the Iranian archaeology, have been outdated. No mention of the new sites and regions explored in Iran during the last two decades is seen in the book. Even the information of classic sites, like Sarab and Sialk, excavated over thirty years ago, is, in most cases, superficial and incomplete. Almost all dates for the Iranian sites are wrong. There is little attention to the Iranian entries than they deserved. With several examples, it has been shown that the word “prehistoric” in the title of the book is nothing but a superficial endeavor to attract the readers. The frequency of wrong, vague, and incomplete information in the book is too high to be regarded as a reliable source of information for students.

The book of Perceptions of Classical Armenia: Romano-Parthian Relations, 70 BC-AD 220 is a Persian translation of a master thesis at Louisiana State University: Perceptions of Classical Armenia: Romano-Parthian Relations, 70 BC-AD 22. This research has mainly focused on the military actions of the Roman emperors from 70 BC to 200 AD. By comparing the various views on the foreign policy of the Romans in the Eastern regions, the political controversy, and especially the conflict between the Romans and the Parthians during these periods, it was aimed to show the image of the Parthians that Romans had in their mind. This article is a review of the research. A comparative study is conducted between the original English version of the book and its Persian translation to examine the accuracy of the content of the work and the translation. Having in mind that there are several well-known works on this subject that have been published in the West. Translating a mediocre work by a translator with a poor command of English language does not seem beneficial. Therefore, it would be more suitable to select another book and/or translator for this subject.

The Ernest Cassirer Symbolist Philosophy was one of the most important systematic philosophical thoughts of the twentieth century, which did not spread as many times as it deserved and was not introduced in principle. One of these reasons was the lack of author’s conclusive work on his philosophy. But at the end of his life, he wrote a book for English speakers, which is an entry into this thinking. The book, An Essay on Man, was translated from French translation to Persian. This book was important because of an independent chapter on art which the philosopher did not have time to review. The present article intends to correct the mistakes by reviewing the Persian text with the English text of the chapter and provide a small field for understanding this valuable and succinct chapter. So, there is no intention of criticizing the translator and only to facilitate the understanding of the topic for the Persian speaker.

Torath is said to be a collection of literary and historical heritage that has been inherited from our ancestors and naturally written with their condition. Throughout history, due to changes made in the language, sometimes writing has become different from generation to generation, and therefore it is difficult to understand the writings of the predecessors. The longer the text is older, the more difficult it is. In addition, the problem will be doubled when such texts should be translated. It is clear that all people cannot go to the original texts and have to use their translations. This is where the role of the translator as a mediator emerges. The translation will become more and more true and influent to the extent that the translator translates in a field that he has capability and has a mastery in the language of origin and destination.

The critique of the book can be considered as an extension of the writer's efforts in providing research results. Critique is the essence of the research, and this article seeks to review the book "The Seasons of the Transfiguration and Al-Tarib", written by and Egyptian writer and interpreter, Mohammed al-Batal. The book consists of eight chapters that deal with various subjects in the field of translation from Arabic to English and vice versa, and although all of these chapters, are the subject of an article, they are scattered. They are also dedicated to specialty in translation. The area where the author pays more attention to is the field of terminology, which is a large part of the book, and even a chapter of the book forms a small culture of press terminology. Considering that books on translation theory have a relatively long history and even a few books have been published in Arabic, the book "The Fosoolfi al-tarjomah va al- tarib" was expected from Mohammad al-Batal which was published in 2007 to deepen the field of translational studies, but a glance at the book's list of sources suggests that the author has an extensive research effort. He has not done much about translation technology and has written more practical experiences.

Mohammad Taghi Qiasi has been researching in different fields of French language and literature. In addition, he has provided numerous translations from French to Farsi, particularly about the translation French works. Among his translations, two books are dedicated to the translation of French poetry. Initially, the translation of forty four pieces of Paul Eluard’s poems entitled Oh Freedom by Mohammad Taghi Qiasi was published in 1978. Later, French Poetry in Twentieth Century was published by Nahid Publications. However, the reasons for the inclusion of some nineteenth century poems have been explained in the introduction of the book. In fact, the French poetry has been only sparsely translated into Persian language, and therefore, it has got a different course in comparison to French prose works. In this way, those who adore poetry have not got the opportunity to get familiar with the rich and influential French poetry. In the present paper, we review the book of French Poetry in the Twentieth Century. We aimed to analyze the reasons for the selection of poems, the method for the introduction of poets, and the classification of the history of French poetry to different periods, as well as the translation methods. In this review work, we aimed to demonstrate to which extent this book may aid those who adore literature, to get familiar with the French poetry

By writing several books during three decades, Mohammad Taghi Ghiasi can be said to stand among those who have tried to make the Persian speaking community acquainted with the French New Criticism. He has thus had an undeniable role in creating the Iranians’ first reception of this movement, particularly, in the context of universities. In so doing, he has introduced himself a translator, a researcher, and even a writer although in most of his books, he is no more than a translator of works of French authors. The present study is on the belief that the quality of Ghiasi’s work in this domain has been progressively declining. This falling trend has gone so far that he has sometimes provided his audience with an incorrect, vague, and even misleading image of some new movements in criticism. The origin of such distorted image of literary criticism can be found in his lack of loyalty in translating French texts and in introducing fundamental changes in them. The Persian speaking reader also faces texts which have little similarity with Ghiasi’s so-called books and the introductions he has written to them.

Mohammad Taghi Ghiasi started his career of translator with the translation of a number of literary criticism books, including a Commentary on the Red and the Black of Stendhal, a Commentary on The Stanger of Camus and a Commentary on the Nausea of Sartre. According to his claims, these translations provided useful resources to the scholars and critics of his time to get acquainted with new theories of critique and their applications on literary oeuvres. To verify the validity of this claim, we should first study the history of literary criticism of Iran in order to have a better understanding of its achievements and deficiencies before the advent of the above-mentioned translations. Then, we will examine the books themselves, their framework, goals and audience, to see if Ghiasi's selection has been innovative and responsive to his time requirements. Finally, the selective-composed approach of the translator in a Commentary on The Stanger of Camus will be studied.

Positive features of the book include the author's relatively fluent writing, detailed layout with simple and appropriate language, and raising the newest perspectives on metaethics. In contrast, failing to address some of the important points and briefly mentioning are considered its drawbacks. Considering the positive aspects of the book, as well as the major section of its discussions in Farsi, as well as the remarkable shortage of Persian resources in the field of metaethics indicate the necessity and importance of translating the book, and the authors of this article translated it based on such necessity. The difficulty of translation took extra energy from translators, in particular in translating new unprecedented book topics into Farsi, especially finding the equivalents of some terms that should be done with accuracy.

This paper critically reviews the Farsi translation of the book entitled Field Methods in Archaeology. The aim of this paper is to evaluate and discuss the quality of the Farsi translation by presenting some of the shortcomings and misunderstanding frequently occurring in the translated book. These shortcomings are classified, exemplified, and discussed by numerous sentences, phrases, and technical and ordinary terms and words as well. The main arguments are discussed under the following subjects: imprecise translation, vague or wrong translation, difficult reading, and inconsistencies in translation. Perhaps, the most obvious problem of the reviewed book is verbatim or literal translation. Lacking rightful and clear understanding of the original text is another major pitfall of the translated book. Using wrong, improper, or vague equivalents is still a further problem of the book under review. These subjects have been exemplified by many examples
