شخصیت جوزپه تومازی دی لامپه‌دوزا هم‌چون آثارش او را فردی خارج از دسته‌بندی‌های معمول قرار می‌دهد. او که وارث یک خانوادة اشرافی سیسیلی کهن است با زنی روان‌کاو که از یک خاندان مهم بالتیک از کشور لیتوانیاست، به نام لیسی ولف، ازدواج می‌کند. لامپه‌دوزا که در ادبیات انگلیسی و فرانسه خبره است و نویسنده‌ای منزوی و درواقع به دور از عرصة اجتماعی و فرهنگی ایتالیای بعداز جنگ جهانی است بیش‌تر «اروپایی» تا «ایتالیایی» و مطمئناً «سیسیلی» محسوب می‌شود. یگانه رمان او به نام یوزپلنگ در واپسین سال عمرش به‌رشتة تحریر درآمده است که پیش‌درآمد، انعکاس، و نشانه‌هایی از آن در داستان‌های کوتاهش به‌خصوص پری دریا و دیگر عناوین بسیار معدود آثار و خاطرات زندگی‌نامه‌اش به‌چشم می‌خورد. لامپه‌دوزا در حکایت وقایع یک خانوادة اشرافی سیسیلی با پس‌زمینة نهضت احیای ملی ایتالیا طی بیست سال (1860-1880) به بازآفرینی تجارب خانوادگی‌اش می‌پردازد، با انتخاب سیسیل دن فابریتزیو سالینا به‌منزلة استعارة جهانی هستی شکننده و فانی بشر که فراتر از بعد زمان و مکان پیش می‌رود. شوخ‌طبعی و درعین‌حال روحیة تراژیک لامپه‌دوزا ـ سالینا مفهوم مرگ و بدبینی ذاتی به «تقدیر باشکوه و متعالی» آدمی در عرصة تاریخ جوزپه تومازی را در جایگاه برجسته‌ترین سبک ادبی سیسیل قرار می‌دهد.

The personality of Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa, as well as his work, escape a conventional cataloging.
